Blizzard Island (Series) (1988-1989)

Aka: Argon Quest (U.S. title)

Blizzard Island
Tracey Allen, a 10 year-old Nova Scotia girl, and her nine year-old brother Wayne find intrigue while rummaging through an old chest. Their father, a sea captain, keeps many strange things — but none stranger than a mysterious necklace. This "special" necklace transports them to the magical world of Blizzard Island. As the children quickly find out, the island is a strange and magical land — filled with strange and magical creatures.

According to legend, the Great Argon, one of Blizzard Island's most famous spell-casters, once found a young girl who survived a shipwreck. Only 10 years old, alone and understandably terrified, the girl was in a terrible mess. The Great Argon took pity on her and used one of his spells to send her home. But to make sure she made it, the wizard placed a necklace around her neck — a solar collector made of "Bhok crystals". But when the Great Argon needed his necklace back, the girl -- or her descendant — would have to bring it back. The wizard would let them know when. Many generations passed. In fact, the story became a myth. Until now.

When one of Blizzard Island's creatures mentions Argon's name, Tracey remembers the story. She come to realize that she and Wayne must return the necklace to the wizard — to save Blizzard Island, to save our world. Throughout their journey, the children meet many characters who want to steal the necklace and harness its legendary power for themselves. Tracey and Wayne's main adversaries include Sidney, the bumbling, vain witch and Sir Percy Python, the opportunistic royal snake who ended up on Blizzard Island as a result of a spell gone awry.

The other characters on the island are a mixed bag of misfits. Uncle Eggbert is a wizard who was left bodyless as a result of a botched spell. Rog, on the other hand, is a Rogoloneon sand creature who befriends the children and helps them in their quest for the sleeping Argon.

Blizzard Island used "Ultimatte", a video system that combines outdoor backgrounds with scenes shot indoors.

The two principal actors, 12-year-old Amy Miller and 10-year-old Shannon Lynch, were cast from an audition list of 250 Halifax youngsters.

Location shooting was done at Mahone Bay, N.S., a waterfall at Musquodoboit, N.S., and the much photographed Peggy's Cove. In all, there were 80 locations for the 12 episodes, representing almost 100 different sets.

Co-produced by Studio East, a Halifax production company, and the CBC.

The puppets were designed and built by Terry Angus and his friend Stoney Ripley, both native Nova Scotians.
