National Driving Test (Special) (1979-1980)

This audience-participation test outlined the dangers of getting behind the wheel of a car. Some of the 40 questions explored the limitations of this sophisticated— but potentially destructive— machine: headlights often don't project far enough, improper selection of tires can deprive you of control and brakes often won't lock simultaneously. Since these limitations are often tragically amplified by human errors, other questions drew attention to sloppy driving habits— not the least of which is trying to eat and drink behind the wheel. Included were a few grisly items to drive the points home: dramatizations of accidents and interviews with crippled survivors of real-life accidents.

Aired on Dec 4, 1979. A sequel aired in 1980 entitled "The 2nd National Driving Test: One for the Road?"
