Showdown (Series) (1961-62)

Host Paul Hanover was on hand every week to guide the musical game of Showdown, the CTV show that featured musical mysteries, memory testing, and offered exciting prizes. The programs were based on the ability of contestants to recognize popular tunes.

In February, 1962, a new twist was added that brought the viewing audience right into the game. A song was played for the viewers who were watching. Immediately afterwards, in one of the eight cities that received the program, a series of phone calls were placed at random to homes in that city. If the person who answered was viewing the show, and could name the home contest tune, he won a prize. The person making the calls kept phoning until he found a winner and the city changed each week.

One of CTV's first programs, Showdown originated from CFCF-TV in Montreal. It marked the first of several co-productions between CTV and Screen Gems, and lasted one season.
