Shoestring Theatre (Series) (1961-1971)

Aka: Teleplay

Shoestring Theatre, a weekly half-hour of drama from Montreal, began as a local, late night broadcast from CBMT, and later expanded to the CBC network as an afternoon show. As the title implies the series got along on minimal budgets. Shoestring Theatre concentrated on theatrical experimentation, but later the series changed its format to include more conventional productions of classic and modern plays. In 1962 it reverted to a local Montreal broadcast, and its name changed to Teleplay in 1967. It had that name when selections from the series returned to the national CBC network as summer programming in 1970-1971.
