Anna Bolena (Special) (1984)

Anna Bolena
The Canadian Opera Company's production of Donizetti's opera, based on the final days of Anne Boleyn's marriage to Henry VIII. Despite her 30-year career, this was soprano Joan Sutherland's first performance in the title role of Anna, the Queen who was unaware of her husband's scheme to be rid of her. The opera began on a somber note with Anna awaiting the arrival of the King (James Morris), who was having an affair with her lady-in-waiting, Jane Seymour (Judith Forsk). Seymour, torn between love and loyalty, had doubts about their affair, but Henry convinced her that Anna's love has also gone astray. To lend truth to his words, Henry sent for Anna's first love (Michael Myers) with the hope of gaining grounds for divorce. The opera was sung in Italian with English subtitles.
